Google has built a multibillion-dollar business out of knowing everything about its users. Now, a video produced within Google and obtained by The Verge offers a stunningly ambitious and unsettling look at how some at the company envision using that information in the future.
The video was made in late 2016 by Nick Foster, the head of design at X (formerly Google X) and a co-founder of the Near Future Laboratory. The video, shared internally within Google, imagines a future of total data collection, where Google helps nudge users into alignment with their goals, custom-prints personalized devices to collect more data, and even guides the behavior of entire populations to solve global problems like poverty and disease.
When reached for comment on the video, an X spokesperson provided the following statement to The Verge:
“We understand if this is disturbing -- it is designed to be. This is a thought-experiment by the Design team from years ago that uses a technique known as ‘speculative design’ to explore uncomfortable ideas and concepts in order to provoke discussion and debate. It’s not related to any current or future products.”
Q Mr. President, sir, could you clarify the context of your use of the word “animal” yesterday in referring to some people who were (inaudible) —
PRESIDENT TRUMP: No. It has nothing to do with this meeting. But I’m referring — and you know I’m referring — to the MS-13 gangs that are coming in. And I was talking about the MS-13 and also — and if you look a little bit further on in the tape, you’ll see that. So I’m actually surprised you’re asking this question because most people got it right.
But I’m saying the MS-13 — you don’t have that where you come from — MS-13, these are animals. They’re coming into our country and we’re getting them out. They come in again, we’re getting them out. We need strong immigration laws. We have the weakest laws in the entire world. We have laws that are laughed at on immigration.
So when the MS-13 comes in, when the other gang members come into our country, I refer to them as “animals.” And guess what? I always will. But we’re getting them out by the thousands. But it’s a big, dangerous job. And they’re able, in some cases, to come back in or new groups come in also from the gangs.
CNN political contributor Ana Navarro — along with a bevy of other journalists and major media outlets — accused President Donald Trump of calling “illegal immigrants ‘animals.'”
But even after CNN’s Chris Cuomo pointed out to Navarro on Thursday that Trump said his “animals” remark referred to the murderous gang MS-13, Navarro said that’s “not good enough.”
The Nicaraguan-born journalist added during the interview that because of Trump’s reported “s**thole” remark in reference to Haiti and other nations, along with statements he’s made about immigrants, “he doesn’t get the benefit of the doubt.”
“It is a very slippery slope when you start dehumanizing people this way,” Narvarro continued. “It’s what the Nazis did. It’s what slave owners did. It’s not what Americans do.”
Nonetheless, in a press conference Thursday, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi blasted the president for making the “animals” comment about MS-13.
Pelosi began by saying, “Some of us who are attracted to the political arena, to government and public service” believe “we are all God’s children.”
“There is a spark of divinity among every person on earth, and we all have to recognize that as we respect the dignity and worth of every person,” Pelosi continued.
The House minority leader then added: “So when the president of the United States says about undocumented immigrants, ‘These aren’t people, these are animals,’ you have to wonder, does he not believe in the spark of divinity, the dignity and worth of every person?”
Q I just want to ask you, because so many people around the country have been talking about it in the last 24 hours, what did the President mean when he said some immigrants are not people, they’re “animals”?
SANDERS: The President was very clearly referring to MS-13 gang members who enter the country illegally and whose deportations are hamstrung by our laws. This is one of the most vicious and deadly gangs that operates by the motto of rape, control, and kill. If the media and liberals want to defend MS-13, they’re more than welcome to.
Frankly, I don’t think the term that the President used was strong enough. MS-13 has done heinous acts. It took an animal to stab a man a hundred times and decapitate him and rip his heart out. It took an animal to beat a woman — they were sex trafficking — with a bat 28 times, indenting part of her body. And it took an animal to kidnap, drug, and rape a 14-year-old Houston girl. Frankly, I think that the term “animal” doesn’t go far enough. And I think that the President should continue to use his platform and everything he can do under the law to stop these types of horrible, horrible, disgusting people.
I’m going to take one more question. Peter…”
Students who witnessed Friday’s shooting at Santa Fe High School in Texas claimed that the shooter was wearing a black trench coat and had a sawed-off shotgun.
Damon Rabon, a Santa Fe student, said that he followed his teacher out of the classroom and saw the shooter firsthand.
“We heard, like, five more bangs, and then the kid came out [with] a black, like, trench coat on, a sawed-off shotgun with a pistol grip, and I think something sharp on his chest,” Rabon described. “And then he turned, and instead of looking our way, he just grabbed his backpack and went right back into the art room, so, at that point, we knew it was an active shooter.”
Rabon said that after he saw the shooter, he and his teacher went back into the classroom and closed the door. His teacher reportedly pulled the fire alarm in order to alert authorities, as Rabon said people in the class did not have cell service in order to call 911.
Another student, Avery Garza, told HLN that he also saw the suspect in a black trench coat and with a sawed-off shotgun.
Garza said his friend witnessed the shooter pulling out a pistol and shooting a girl in the head.
“He was in that class, and the shooter came in and started shooting. And he had a sawed-off shotgun and a pistol. And he shot a girl, and then pulled his pistol out and shot her in the head,” Garza said.
“We know who it is, but unfortunately I cannot give the name out. He was wearing a trench coat, I think it said USSR on it,” he added.
The gunfire was first reported before 8 a.m. Friday.
Witnesses said at least one suspect came into the school and opened fire in an art class.
Some students also said the shooter was throwing explosives into a classroom.
As of 9:45 a.m. law enforcement was sweeping the campus for the possibility of explosive devices, a threat they said they were taking “very seriously.”
Some students say they were evacuated down the street to a nearby auto shop as police surrounded the school.
Many parents are now lining up to pick their kids up at the business.
“School shooting in Texas. Early reports not looking good. God bless all!,” President Trump tweeted.
The school is located about 30 miles southeast of Houston.
A gunman who fired shots to bring police to the Trump National Doral golf course and resort early Friday was disabled by five officers who shot him in his legs, a police chief said.
The resort is in northwest Miami-Dade County. It is owned by President Donald Trump’s privately held company; he was not on the premises during the 1:30 a.m. incident.
Arrested was Jonathan Oddi, 42, a Doral resident who was hospitalized in stable condition. The only other reported injury was to a Doral police officer who broke his wrist.
A police chief said officers were called after Oddi pointed a handgun at staff and began firing.
Miami-Dade Police Director Juan Perez said Oddi appparently wanted to “engage our police officers, some type of ambush type attack, trying to lure our police officers.”
One officer from Miami-Dade police and four officers from Doral Police raced to the hotel at Northwest 36th Street and 87th Avenue and all exchanged gunfire with Oddi, Perez said.
“He did succeed, and he did lose,” Perez said. “That’s the bottom line.”
The two police agencies train together and Perez credited that collaboration with a prompt end to the threat. No hotel employees or guests were hurt.
Multiple fatalities are being reported in a shooting at a Texas high school, which is on lockdown.
One person is in custody after the attack at the Santa Fe High School, about 40 miles (65 km) south of Houston, according to school officials.
The school district has confirmed people were injured in an "active shooter" incident as classes began. It is unclear if the attacker was a student. Police have not yet confirmed any fatalities.
News helicopters filmed students emptying their backpacks in front of armed officers in a field outside the school.
Local media are reporting the shooting began as the fire alarm went off. It is not clear how the alarm was activated.

James Comey was the dirty cop in charge of a bunch of dirty cops. And what you have here is, this was a criminal plot by senior people: John Brennan, James Comey, James Clapper, senior Department of Justice officials to suborn the presidency of the Unite States through the use of false evidence. The false FISA warrants were obtained through lying to the FISA Court. When all is said and done, Mr. Huber who is conducting the grand jury to investigate the unmasking, the lying of the FISA court, and the leaking of the information to the press. It will be shown without a shadow of a doubt that the reason Mr. Brennan has been lying under congressional testimony from the beginning is because he knew if he told the truth that he would reveal the plot that involved all the people. That story in The New York Times today is a magnificent piece of evidence that there was in fact a plot… There was an effort to undermine the candidacy of the opposition party, This is the most unbelievable scandal in the history of this country and The New York Times just blew the lid off of it.
A Hamas official on Wednesday acknowledged that 50 of the 62 Palestinians reported killed during Gaza border riots on Monday and Tuesday were members of the Islamist terrorist group, bringing the total number of known members of terror groups among the fatalities up to 53.
“In the last rounds of confrontations, if 62 people were martyred, Fifty of the martyrs were Hamas and 12 from the people. How can Hamas reap the fruits if it pays such an expensive price?” said Hamas official Salah Bardawil in an interview with the Palestinian Baladna news outlet.
Questioned about the figures by the presenter, Bardawil said they were “official.”
A 25-year-old Dallas-area man was arrested Friday after posing as a 17-year-old Hurricane Harvey victim and high-school freshman for roughly nine months, and starring for a high-school basketball team, per The Dallas Morning News.
Sidney Bouvier Gilstrap-Portley was arrested Friday night, booked into the Dallas County Jail and has since bonded out, according to court records. He faces a charge of tampering with government records.
Gilstrap-Portley enrolled at Skyline High School at the beginning of the 2017-18 school year, posing as a victim of Hurricane Harvey under the name Rashun Richardson. The school had opened its doors to hurricane victims, and Gilstrap-Portley took advantage. In October, though, Gilstrap-Portley transferred to Hillcrest High School, where he played basketball and also began dating a 14-year-old girl, a story police are still investigating.
Gilstrap-Portley was voted the District 11-5A offensive player of the year by coaches. Hillcrest went 11-10 this past season.

Birmingham, Alabama - While some pass by the New Era Baptist Church and never notice a sign in the church’s front yard, there are others, especially those who live nearby, who can't help but see it. "I really think it shouldn't be up there," says 16-year old Keagan Edwards. He doesn't live too far from the sign that reads: "Black Folks Need to Stay Out of White Churches." On the other side, it says: "White folks refused to be our neighbors." -- "I wouldn't have a problem going to a predominately white church because everyone's not racist and you've got to give somebody a chance," says Edwards. We're not exactly sure what Pastor Michael R. Jordan meant by the sign. We tried reaching him through the church phone number, however, it was disconnected. But Jordan is no stranger to controversy.
In 2013, after George Zimmerman was acquitted in the Trayvon Martin case, he put up a sign that read: "George Zimmerman Jury Supported White Racism." The latest sign caught the attention of Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin. "There is a spirit that is over this city that has to be brought down. A spirit of racism and division," Woodfin said in a Facebook post. "We have to change the conversation to what we need it to evolve into. Darkness cannot drive out darkness. Only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that," the post went on to say. William Summerville disagrees with the sign, but he feels there just may be some positive that can come from it. "It can bring a lot of people closer together because everybody is going to come together and start expressing their feelings and everybody can get on the same level and everybody can be happy," he says.
Sen. Cory Booker (D- N.J.) wants those from outside his state and party to know that he's been reaching out to understand them. Vance's 'Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis', is described as "a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis—that of white working-class Americans," by it's publisher. Booker made the comments at the Center for American Progress Ideas Conference Tuesday.

MORGAN COUNTY, Ind. - Recently unsealed court documents reveal gruesome details in the murder of a five-year-old boy with special needs, according to WXIN.
Steven Ingalls is accused of the asphyxiation and intentional overdose death of Brayson Price.
The child’s mother, Meghan Price, faces conspiracy to commit murder and neglect charges.
“The apartment was a small two-bedroom apartment. The argument is it's impossible for this much violence without the other person not waking up and knowing what’s going on,” said Prosecutor Steve Sonnega. “They were both there. Mr. Ingalls took the position as a caregiver living with the mother.”
Ingalls called Mooresville police on the morning of Nov. 23, 2016, to report an unresponsive child.
While Brayson was rushed to the hospital, the first officer on the scene spotted “a large amount of blood in the bedroom” where the boy was found.
“Things just didn’t look right,” Detective Chad Richhard is quoted as saying in court documents.
During the initial stage of the investigation, Richhart told the court he was able to examine the cell phones of both Ingalls and Price.
Ingalls, Price’s boyfriend since 2014 and the father of the couple’s toddler son also named Steven, allegedly used his cell phone to conduct internet searches the month before Brayson’s death with topic lines such as, “kill my mentally retarded step-son, torture techniques, beat child with fragile X abuse, I want to kill my autistic child, painful ways to die, most painful torture,” according to the PC.
A Canton man is recovering in the hospital after a traffic stop.
Ronald Wagner II was pulled over Sunday by an Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper for not having a front license plate.
Wagner refused to get out of his vehicle, so the trooper called the Canton Police Department for help. The officers brought a K-9, who bit down on Wagner, getting him out of the car.
Wagner argues it's within his rights to stay in his car. “I'm staying inside my vehicle, where my rights are protected by the Fourth Amendment,” Wagner argued.
When asked why he didn’t comply with officers. He responded, “Once you comply, you give up your rights. I didn’t want to give up my rights, so I did not consent."
Wagner has been in the hospital since the incident on Sunday. He has undergone two surgeries, but was expected to be released Tuesday night. He says he is considering a lawsuit. Canton police say they incident is under review.
